5 Ways to Use Fresh Mint

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Nothing says summer to me like a big pot of fresh mint!! I always have a pot growing on the barn porch so that I have mint leaves to use whenever I need them. Mint can get out of hand easily, so every week I cut a fresh bunch and keep it in a mason jar by the kitchen sink to make it easier to use. Here are 5 ways I use my mint crop in my home.

1. MINT SUN TEA

This one‘s a no brainer. Wash and pat dry aporoximately six mint sprigs. Add to a glass jar filled with cold water and three family size tea bags. Place in the full sun for 2-4 hours, depending on how strong you like it. Remove tea bags and wilted mint, add desired amount of sugar, and refrigerate immediately. It‘s summer in jar y’all!

2. MINT ICE CUBES

Easy Peasy and so much fun! Seperate mint leaves from stems, add to sections of ice cube trays filled with water. Freeze and enjoy!! These ice cubes are awesome in lemonade or cucumber water.

3. MINT SIMPLE SYRUP

Bring one cup water and one cup sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Add several sprigs of mint, stem and all to saucepan. Cover and let cool completely. When syrup is cooled completely, store in a glass jar with lid. Refrigerate and use within 5-7 days. I use this in place of regular simple syrup for cocktails, lemonade and my favorite homemade mojitos.

4. MINT SUGAR

Add 1/2 cup washed mint leaves to a food processor with one cup sugar. Make sure leaves are completely dry. Process until throughly combined. Store in an airtight container and use within 3 days. I use this in hot tea, and as a rimmer when making cocktails! Run a fresh lime around the rim of your glasses and dip into a small plate with mint sugar. It instantly elevates even the most basic drink.

5. GARBAGE DISPOSAL FRESHENER

Add several mint sprigs and a handul of ice cubes to your garbage disposal. Run until ice is broken up and disposal is running smooth. Enjoy the fresh smell of a clean disposal!!

I hope you find some inspiration to freshen up your summer and your kitchen! Grab some scissors and clip a fresh bunch of mint from your garden. If you’re not growing mint yet, pick up a small plant from your nursery or in the produce section of your grocery store. It’s not too late and you won’t be sorry! See you next time!!
